Many people experience difficulties in their sexual relationships at some stage. It's an area of our life that we rarely talk about, but it can cause significant problems which can affect our everyday lives. Many concerns about sex and intimacy are often linked to other underlying issues such as stress, anxiety or depression, but sexual function can also be affected by chronic illness, the side-effects of medication, surgery, ageing or just everyday 21st century life. Basically, people can find themselves in need of psychosexual therapy for a variety of reasons.
It's normal to experience sexual issues or concerns at some point in life and seeking help is nothing to be ashamed of. Some common concerns include a loss of sexual desire or difficulty becoming aroused, concerns about sexual orientation, or experiencing erectile dysfunction. Other problems can include premature or delayed ejaculation, difficulty reaching orgasm, painful intercourse and vaginismus.
Additionally, some people may face intimacy issues related to a disability or chronic condition, while others may experience fear, shame or performance anxiety around sex. Past sexual trauma and abuse is also likely to have a lasting impact on sexual functioning. Whatever the concern, know that there are resources available to help you address and overcome these issues.
Talking about sex and intimacy may initially feel awkward, but I will help to put you at your ease. Through sex therapy, you can learn to express your concerns clearly and better understand your own (and your partner's) sexual needs.
We will begin with an assessment so that we can identify exactly what issues you are experiencing and what are the factors involved. We can then work towards resolving your concerns and improving your communication and intimacy.
If you are in a relationship, it's helpful - but not essential - to involve your partner.
Over the course of the programme, you will be assigned homework tasks which include communication exercises with your partner (if applicable), focussing on sensation and touch (using mindfulness techniques), education about sexual techniques and changing the way you interact with your partner during sex.
You will also attend regular therapy sessions with me to support you and enable you to overcome any difficulties you may face whilst working through the programme.
Regaining a healthy sex life can help to rebuild your confidence, strengthen your relationship, improve communication with your partner, increase your knowledge about sexual issues and relieve stress.
"The therapy was excellent. I am 73 and had virtually given up on sexual relations with my wife due to confidence issues. Matters are fully resolved and sex life between us is now very good indeed. It was difficult for me to fully open up at first, but Julie put me at my ease and the feelings of embarrassment went away after a few sessions."
